AP Chemistry

1.3 credits, 8 periods per cycle all year

AP Chem: Basic Info

10th-12th Grade

Description:  The Advanced Placement Chemistry course seeks to meet the objectives of the general chemistry course usually taken during the first-year of college. Topics such as the structure of matter, the kinetic theory of gases, chemical equilibriums, chemical kinetics, and the basic concepts of thermodynamics will be presented. Laboratory work will be stressed as well as chemical calculations and mathematical formulation of principles. Students are expected to take the AP exam in the spring. A summer assignment will be given.

Prerequisites:

min 82% in Biology 510-Honors

AND min 82% in Algebra II/Trig. Honors or min 92% in Algebra II/Trig.

AND min 87% in Honors Chemistry or min 97% in Academic Chemistry or min 94% DE Chemistry

From students taking this class:

What do you like most about this class?

"I really enjoy the labs, they are very interactive, create interesting reactions and help reinforce class content in challenging ways with immense diversity."

"I love Mr. Outland's way of expressing information. Each and every time he starts a new lesson, he constantly maintains the motivation to teach and inspire kids with new information."

Convenient Scheduling:

AP Chem comes with two lab periods per cycle. Some students decide to double up science by also taking Physics, which has 1 lab period.

Ex. AP Bio during Period 1, Physics during Period 3

Bio lab on Period 2 A and C days, Physics lab on Period 2 E day

Some students accelerate chemistry over the summer to take AP Bio or AP Chem the next year. It takes some hard work, but can free up space for more high-level courses like this one in your schedule. Keep the math prerequisites in mind.

From the Teacher, Mr. Outland:

How would you say AP Chem differs from Honors/Academic Chem?

AP Chemistry is equivalent to  2 semesters of Freshmen college chemistry for science and engineering majors.

Anything you want to say to students considering taking AP Chem?

This class requires more attention to listening / processing during class than taking copious notes. The notes are all provided as Google Slides, so listening carefully and just taking notes when I elaborate on the slides will help you to process the context and better understand how different concepts relate to each other.

Any cool jokes?

Why did Amadeo Avogadro stop getting massages on the 24th?

Because he was only "tense to the 23rd"!

Career Clusters:

Engineering, Manufacturing, and Technology

Have you always been fascinated by vehicles? Do you like to drive them or fix them?  Would you like to get paid to build the things people use every day?  Are you good working with your hands? Can you figure out how a machine works?  Are you detail-oriented? Do you want to know how things work, or enjoy solving problems?

Ex. Biochemist, Dental Laboratory Technician, Environmental Scientist, Etc.,

Health Science Technology

Would you like to get paid for taking care of others?

Ex. Allergist, Anesthesiologist, Physical Therapist, Biomedical Engineer, Dentist, Dermatologist, Home Healthcare Worker, Neurologist, Nurse, Ophthalmologist, Psychiatrist, Vetrinarian, etc.

Common Progressions:

What are my options after taking AP Chemistry?

So many options. Anatomy, Oceanography, Hydroponic Farming-- go check it out!

If you haven't taken Physics yet, especially sophomores in AP Chem, consider this for next year.

AP Biology, AP Environmental, and AP Physics can all be good options if you haven't taken them yet.
