Programs

Here are some of the STEM-related programs available to the Methacton community. This is just a brief list so make sure to do your own research and more importantly, let you high school counselor know your interests so that they can introduce programs that might be of interest to you!!

Montgomery County STEM Research Competitions

The Montgomery County Science Research Competition (MSRC) and Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science (PJAS)  run research competitions for high schoolers. Join the school's Science Fair team to develop your own research project and compete with it at these events! See the website (https://www.mcsta.org) for more information.​

Teen Research Internship Program  (TRIP Initiative)

The Teen Research Internship Program, otherwise known as the TRIP Initiative, is a program offered by the Fox Chase Cancer Center that helps high school students explore their interests in a laboratory setting. Students get to perform their own independent research, design their own projects through newly learned techniques, and even present at a symposium with scientific leaders from all over the community! Any high school student from grades 9-12 is eligible to participate in this FREE program. Please take a look at TRIP’s website (https://www.tripinitiative.com/) if you are interested!

Immersion Science Program

The Immersion Science Program, also known as ISP, is a cost-free, 11-week laboratory research program offered by the Fox Chase Cancer Center that provides students the opportunity to explore their scientific and biomedical interests. Students can create their own experiments and research projects on the topic of how nutrients in a diet influences cancer signaling. ISP students get to work with professional scientists and educators as well! Any student above the age of 16 who has completed Chemistry and Biology is eligible to participate in this FREE program. Allied Health

The Allied Health offered by the North Montco Technical Career Center is designed for students in grade 12 who are interested in pursuing a career in healthcare. Based in a hospital setting, the program offers hands-on learning where you learn about theory, practice in clinical rotations, and gain exposure to what working alongside certified individuals in a hospital feels like. You apply in your junior year of high school (must be in 11th grade to apply) and although the application portion is free, you must have your own transportation to and from the program as well as pay any fees for scrubs/any necessary material. Biotechnology

The Biotechnology program offered by North Montco Technical Career Center (NMTCC) prepares students intending to go to college majoring in the sciences with theoretical and practical knowledge in a laboratory setting. Students learn various molecular and biological techniques and train in cell culture, recombinant DNA technology, protein purification, electrophoresis, forensics PCR, and more. This is a highly selective, merit-based program designed for juniors and seniors who have completed Chemistry and Biology courses and are deeply passionate about science. Penn Summer High School Data Analytics Camp

The University of Pennsylvania has developed completely online, high-quality programs designed to help high schoolers keep up with this modern world of technology. Students will learn skills in Excel, Python programming, visual charting and dashboard creation with Tableau, and collecting various forms of data. Anyone in grades 9-12 can apply but please note that there is a tuition fee of $2,500.

Penn Summer High School Coding Camp

This program is designed to introduce students to the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to get experience in computer programming. The Penn Summer High School Coding Camp is completely online and offers a challenging curriculum in HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, and jQuery.

Junior Achievement

The Junior Achievement of Southeastern Pennsylvania Program aims to provide students with the opportunity to establish an entrepreneurial mindset through creating their own start-up business in small groups made up of other innovative students. Each business is paired with an established company, such as Pfizer or IKEA, with skilled mentors working at these companies guiding each group of students through the process of managing a business. Through this program, students will have the chance to experience the various aspects of being in a business field, from marketing their product to the community to actually creating it and tracking the business’s expenses. They will even have the opportunity to compete as a business against other business groups across the region, with the chance to qualify for the National Competition!
