Chemistry (Honors, Academic, DE)
1.2 credits, 7 periods per cycle all year
Academic
10th-12th Grade
Description: This course covers basic chemistry in light of modern concepts. Fundamental theories, laws, and chemical calculations receive thorough attention. Laboratory work is an integral part of the course.
Math pre-req: min 70% Biology
Science pre-req: min 70% Algebra 1
Dual Enrollment
MCCC Requirements
Description: This course is designed to acquaint liberal arts and nursing majors with certain fundamental facts, principles, and techniques of chemistry with a view toward their application in modern life. Upon completion of the course with at least a 70% average, you will earn 4 college credits (3 lecture, 1 lab) in chemistry through MCCC. These credits are considered “highly transferable” to many 4-year universities as long as the student is not majoring in a science or engineering.
Pre-req: 82% or better in Academic Biology, Academic Algebra I and Academic Geometry
OR a 72% or higher in Honors Bio, Honors Algebra I and/or Honors Geometry
Honors
10th-11th Grade
Description: This course is an intensive, accelerated, first-year chemistry course requiring excellent mathematical and reasoning skills. Topics such as equilibrium, kinetics, acid/base reactions, thermodynamics, and stoichiometry will be studied at a level requiring advanced mathematical, reasoning abilities.
Science pre-req: min 80% Honors Bio, min 90% Academic Bio

Math pre-req: 80% Honors Algebra + 80% Honors Geometry
OR 90% Academic Algebra I (9th grade) + 90% Academic Geometry
Convenient Scheduling:
Chemistry comes with one lab period per cycle. If your schedule is already looking full, consider cascading the lab period with an elective/foreign language.
Ex. Chemistry during Period 1, Spanish during Period 2
Skip one period of Spanish per cycle, going to chemistry lab instead.
Common Progressions:
What are my options after taking Chemistry?
Physics without the use of advanced mathematics; no lab periods
Standard progression from Chemistry
More intensive than academic; sometimes paired with another AP science
Often paired with Physics in junior year (doubling up) for scheduling convenience
