0.5 credits, 3 periods per cycle all year or 6 periods per cycle for one semester

Hydroponic Farming: Basic Info

9th-12th Grade

Description: Are you interested in learning how to grow plants with only water and nutrients without soil? Explore Methacton’s own hydroponic farm by using advanced vertical farming techniques. Learn the positives and negatives to all types of farming and their effects on the environment, biodiversity, and society. Students will complete labs in the classroom while also having hands-on experience working in the hydroponic farm. This course is designed to cover how plants can be grown hydroponically, how the scientific method is not a linear process and how hydroponic farming has benefits to society. Emphasis will also be placed on business, marketing, computer science and mathematics. 

Prerequisites:

75% or better in Environmental Science or 9th grader currently taking Biology

Scheduling Information

This is a half credit elective course, so unless you're in your senior year, you should plan on taking another full-credit science class this year as well. Remember that you need 3.0 credits of science classes by the end of senior year in order to graduate!

Also, this class counts towards the 1.0 credit of STEM (Science, Tech/Computers, Engineering, Mathematics) needed to graduate.
